What's a Widget?

Simply put, a widget is a little mini-application that can provide information, functionality, or even a little bit of fun right on your desktop.

Widgets can be all sorts of things. There are weather widgets, web-cam widgets, search widgets, RSS widgets, and many more. Widgets are generally only a keystroke or even a click away, so they can come in very handy for doing simple, quick tasks.

Dashboard and Widget Engine
There are two types of widgets: Those that run in Dashboard and those that run in Widget Engine. Dashboard and Widget Engine are two similar widget 'environments'. Dashboard is included with Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger' from Apple. Widget Engine is a free application from Yahoo! and is available for Mac and Windows. They both run widgets similarly, and we build widgets for both of them.
